Proverbial Meaning: It sometimes seems as though things that we aren’t allowed to have are highly desirable and, in fact, these things often are “sweet” if we do somehow manage to obtain them regardless of obstructing barriers, rules or laws.

Literal Origins: This proverb has its origins in the Christian Bible where Adam and Eve were tempted to eat the “forbidden fruit” in the garden of Eden. One should perhaps note that, though the fruit was indeed very sweet and tasty, they were banished from the garden for eating it.

Common Usage: The proverb is not very common in spoken English, but the sentiment would be understood by most.
